Nothing says “We’re proud of our heritage” like a four-face, cast-iron clock and the Leesburg Chamber is definitely proud to have a connection to its storied past. The 16 1/2-foot street clock on Main Street in front of Towne Square is a memorial to Marvin and Marie Bowden from Kiser Hardaway and family. Marie was the first woman president of the Leesburg Chamber of Commerce and a driving force in the creation of Leesburg’s first public hospital, Marvin owned Eddie’s Grocery Store and Pleasant Oak Trailer Park.

Leesburg Chamber Highlight: Main Street

In the 1970s, Leesburg’s downtown was decaying and dying, it’s life drained by urban sprawl. Today, downtown is vibrant and welcoming thanks to efforts of the Leesburg Partnership, Inc., the Florida Main Street Program and the City of Leesburg and community volunteers. In 1997, the city commission approved a Tax Increment Financing district encompassing 105 city blocks to leverage public funds and promote private sector activity. Those funds make possible a 30-year, multi-million dollar phased development for Leesburg. In 1999, a $1.5 million streetscape project began. The streetscape project included planting 183 trees.
